SAN JOSE – A carjacking suspect was dead and an officer was in the hospital following a police shooting Wednesday afternoon in downtown San Jose, according to authorities.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. near West Julian Street and Notre Dame Avenue.
The officer was taken to an area hospital, the San Jose Police Department said in a social media post. An update on the officer’s condition was not immediately available.
A source familiar with the investigation said the suspect was dead.
The suspect was being pursued for carjackings, armed robberies and shootings spanning San Mateo County to Hollister.
In a video provided to the Bay Area News Group, a police vehicle can be seen in the middle of an intersection, lights on and traffic stopped all around it. Shots begin to ring out; the shooting intensifies as a plain-clothed person emerges from the driver’s seat, running about 30-40 yards away before collapsing.
Approximately three seconds after the person has fallen to the ground, a San Jose police vehicle enters the frame at full speed, violently running the person over a split-second after they can be seen moving on the ground. Dozens more gunshots ring out though the person does not appear to be moving after the vehicle runs them over.
