CONCORD — A candle left unattended on a first-floor unit caused a two-alarm fire at a condominium complex Wednesday that killed a cat and left eight people displaced, fire officials said.
The fire broke out about 1:20 p.m. at the complex on Sapling Court near Concord High School.
In a statement, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said heavy smoke and flames were apparent when firefighters arrived, and officials sounded a second alarm to keep the blaze from spreading. Firefighters got inside the building and attacked it from there. From inside, they discovered that all the occupants in the units were outside.
They later found a cat dead after controlling the blaze.
The district said none of the residents in the condominium complex were injured, nor were any firefighters.
The American Red Cross was working to find housing for the eight people who were displaced.
