Dan Levy is mourning the loss of his “Schitt’s Creek” co-star and “extended family” Catherine O’Hara, following her death on Friday at age 71.
The beloved “Home Alone” and “Beetlejuice” actress died on Friday at her Los Angeles home “following a brief illness,” her manager confirmed to the Daily News.
O’Hara’s death hit hard for those who knew and loved her, including Levy, who co-created “Schitt’s Creek” and played her son on the sitcom for six seasons.
“What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years,” the 42-year-old Emmy winner wrote in an emotional tribute to his TV mom.
“Having spent over 50 years collaborating with my dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family,” Levy wrote on Instagram. “It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her.”
Levy said his “heart goes out” to O’Hara’s longtime husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke, as well as “every member of her big, beautiful family.”
In 2020, O’Hara won her second and final Emmy — of many nominations — for her role as Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek,” the hit sitcom created by Levy and his dad, co-star Eugene Levy.
O’Hara and the elder Levy had been friends since the 1970s. The two worked together numerous times throughout their careers, including on the Canadian sketch comedy series “SCTV” and in four Christopher Guest mockumentary films.
Many other stars have paid tribute to O’Hara following news of her passing, including “Home Alone” co-star Macaulay Culkin, longtime friend and collaborator Michael Keaton, and comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short.
