Málaga, Mendocino, Morgan Hill. The Silicon Valley city, known for its farms, may have more in common with vacation hotspots than you think. The quiet, pastoral setting with a burgeoning restaurant scene is attracting visitors as a wine country and wedding destination.
“It’s got that small-town charm — but close enough to the big city with enough culture and diversity that you get the best of both worlds,” says Alfonso Castillo, the vice president of hospitality for Léal Hospitality Group.
The locally-owned company sells some 300 wedding packages a year at its MOHI Farm and MOHI Ranch properties, the art deco Granada Theatre event space downtown, the stately Willow Heights Mansion and nearby Léal Vineyards. The allure is simple. Resting in the valley between the Diablo and Santa Cruz mountain ranges and along the Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail, there are you-pick farms, hiking and cycling trails to explore and the largest state park in Northern California — Henry W. Coe State Park.
Chefs and winemakers, farmers and artists make their home in what seems like a direct contrast to life in Silicon Valley. In fact, the town’s marketing arm, Visit Morgan Hill, has been known to use the social media hashtag MorganChill.
A recent overnight stay was an eye-opener for a friend and me. Evident instantly was the lack of litter, blight and graffiti. Merchants say it’s a well-run city, with a lot of tech workers who want clean streets and a safe environment in which to raise their families. A massive state-of-the-art complex, Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center, hosts games year-round, and the downtown has a bustling farmers market on weekends.
Restaurants in Morgan Hill serve fruits and vegetables grown in the region. On any given day, the aforementioned downtown hotspot MOHI Farm is packed with diners enjoying healthy harvest bowls and a rotating menu of their freshly-picked vegetables. The restaurant is open and airy inside and has a large sidewalk patio with a green John Deere tractor that kids (and adults) can climb on. The bargain of the century is a bottle of MOHI Rosé — just $21.
Speaking of wineries, more than 35 wineries are in the Morgan Hill region, including the grandfather of them all, Guglielmo Winery, founded in 1925. Guglielmo has a handsome tasting room, gift shop and beautiful event space for weddings and wine club parties.
A fun activity for bachelorette parties and other gatherings is flower design at Luxe Flower Bar. Pick a vase and flowers from the Pick a Stem Bar, and a floral designer helps you make a beautiful arrangement to take home.
Wedding couples who love art can rent the new downtown gallery called Cura Contemporary, a two-story exhibit space featuring work by local artists. The gallery also features a warm, contemporary cafe called Vera, where diners can enjoy chef-driven salads, oysters, lobster rolls, sashimi and award-winning cocktails crafted by mixologist Robin Wolf.
Another downtown restaurant that bills itself as embodying “artisan ideologies” is Craft Roots Vegan Bar & Grill. The 100% plant-based offerings take full advantage of the farms in the region, and Craft Roots has an impressive craft beer and cocktail menu along with sassy ciders from Morgan Hill’s TenFiveOne Cider Co.
With a walkable downtown, a wine trail, hiking, biking and farms, Morgan Hill is perfectly positioned for a Bay Area getaway. Taking full advantage of the growing interest in Morgan Hill, Léal Hospitality Group will open the new downtown Hotel MOHI by Appellation in early 2026, featuring three restaurants and a rooftop pool and deck.
