Hilary Duff tearfully confirmed the has been long estranged from big sister Haylie ahead of the Disney Channel alum’s new album and world tour.
The “Why Not” singer, 38, said on “CBS Mornings” Friday that “a whole lot of complex family stuff,” inspired multiple songs from her new album, “luck… or something,” specifically her relationships with 41-year-old Haylie and their father.

Duff confirmed that she “really struggled” about whether to include “We Don’t Talk,” as it spotlights “the most lonely part of my existence,” which is “not having my sister in my life at the moment.”
“It’s funny, as a person that exists in the world without my other half, so many people are having that experience,” said Duff, having ultimately decided to share “my truth. … And for me, making a record was just going to be about connection. I was never going to take outside songs from people.”
The “Younger” star found the experience “healing” after having watched people speculate about the fractured relationship, though she doesn’t think it would help if Haylie were to hear the song.
“For everyone that is where I’m sitting, you have to do what … feels good for you,” Duff continued. “It’s taken me a long time to get there. … I don’t know if she’ll hear it. I don’t know how she’ll react to it.”
She also confirmed that “The Optimist” addresses her relationship with her father, who she’s sure loves her, even if “it’s hard for it to feel” like that amid “some of the circumstances.”
“I think it’s really challenging for … one person to have major success in a family,” said Duff. “It’s hard to get back to a place of health. It takes everybody involved to be able to do that.”
She told Glamour in a new cover interview that “just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street.”
