OAKLAND — A man has been charged with multiple crimes, including attempted murder, for allegedly kidnapping his 76-year-old grandmother, beating her and firing at least one shot at her as they drove in a car on East Bay freeways, according to authorities and court records.

The suspect, Omari Orel Warren, 36, was charged Feb.19 with attempted murder, kidnapping, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, elder abuse and felon in possession of a firearm. According to court records, he has four prior felony convictions including one in October 2024 for felon in possession of a firearm, for which he is on parole.

According to court records, Warren told his grandmother at the start of the ordeal: “We both dying tonight.”

He was being held without bail Wednesday at Santa Rita Jail and was scheduled to appear in court March 17 to enter a plea and for a parole revocation hearing.

Warren was arrested about 11:15 p.m. Feb. 14 by California Highway Patrol officers responding to a report of a physical altercation on southbound Highway 13 north of Joaquin Miller Road, in the Oakland hills. His grandmother was found in the vehicle.

According to court records that pieced together the woman’s ordeal, the grandmother and Warren live together in East Contra Costa County. Earlier that day, Warren allegedly began making statements saying she was not his grandmother, pulled a gun on her and said “we both dying tonight.”
