SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — First baseman Rafael Devers was scratched from Friday’s lineup against World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the reigning back-to-back champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants have yet to announce why Devers was scratched.
Devers, who is hitless in eight at-bats this spring, was originally slated to hit second and play first base. Top prospect Bryce Eldridge will take Devers’ spot in the lineup and hit second. The rest of the lineup remains the same.
One notable inclusion in Friday’s lineup was 28-year-old Victor Bericoto, who is 3-for-5 during Cactus League play with one home run and three RBIs.
Bericoto signed with the Giants for $25,000 as an international free agent in 2018 out of Venezuela. He reached Triple-A Sacramento for the first time last year but spent most of the season with Double-A Richmond, hitting .267 with 12 homers over 93 games.
“He’s looked good when he’s been in there,” said manager Tony Vitello. “I’ve really liked the looseness to his swing. I think the baserunning and defense is something that, I don’t want to say I undervalued it, but it’s been a pleasant surprise to me that he’s a well-rounded player.”
Worth noting
- Right-handed reliever Joel Peguero (tight left hamstring) is scheduled to throw a live bullpen today. Peguero had a 2.42 ERA and 3.85 FIP over 22 1/3 innings with the Giants last season as a rookie.
