Star New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who’s played a key role in the meteoric rise of Pro Bowl quarterback Drake Maye, was accused of felony strangulation, Massachusetts court records revealed on Tuesday.
Diggs, 32, also faces a misdemeanor assault charge, stemming from an alleged incident that happened on Dec. 2, Dedham District Court records showed.
That would have been a day after New England beat the New York Giants, 33-15, on “Monday Night Football.”
He’s set to be arraigned on Jan. 23, which would be two days ahead of the AFC championship game, according to court records.
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations,” according to a Patriots statement.
“We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.”
The veteran wideout has played in all 16 of New England’s games so far this season, making 82 catches for 970 yards as Maye’s favorite target.
Diggs became a star in the NFL during his time with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, where he was a 1,000-yard receiver for six consecutive seasons.
The Patriots, fighting for the AFC’s No. 1 seed, finish the regular season on Sunday by playing host to the Miami Dolphins.
“We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” the NFL said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this time.”
Diggs recently welcomed a newborn baby boy with girlfriend and rapper Cardi B.
