OAKLAND — A San Leandro man has been arrested and criminally charged in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist near the Oakland Coliseum in November 2024, according to authorities and court records.
The suspect, Mateo Hernandez, 24, is charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and leaving the scene of an accident that caused a death or serious injury. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled to enter a plea Jan. 8.
Killed in the Nov. 23, 2024 collision was Reggie Warren, 59, of Oakland.
According to court records and authorities, Hernandez was driving south in the 600 block of Hegenberger Road in a Honda Civic belonging to a relative about 8:04 p.m. that night when he failed to stop for a red light at Baldwin Street and struck Warren, who was in a crosswalk. Warren was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Hernandez kept driving without making any attempt to see how badly Warren was injured, the documents say.
At the time of the incident, police had no witnesses or other leads in the case. But in May of this year, investigators received tips about Hernandez allegedly being the driver and having admitted his involvement to others.
According to the documents, based on that information investigators reviewed license plate reader cameras and were able to track the Honda to Hernandez’s home in San Leandro.
Police recovered the vehicle on May 2 at Hernandez’s home. He was present and denied to officers he was involved in the hit-and-run, claiming it was another person driving, the records say.
He was not arrested at the time of the search. After additional investigation — including a review of his cell phone records, which showed him in the area of the hit-and-run around the time it happened — a warrant was issued for his arrest; he was taken into custody on Dec. 13.
