SAN LEANDRO — A failed carjacking in San Leandro led to a seven-mile police chase to the Oakland Hills that ended with three arrests Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The sequence began around 2:30 p.m. near Polvorosa Avenue and Doolittle Drive when a motorist reported being approached by “multiple armed and masked suspects” — carrying handguns and rifles — who were traveling in two cars and tried to forcibly take the victim’s vehicle, according to San Leandro police.
The victim was able to flee uninjured and contacted police. Drawing on the victim’s description and automated license-plate reader cameras, San Leandro police said officers tracked one of the suspects’ vehicles, a white Mercedes SUV, to 82nd Avenue in Oakland.
Upon sight of officers closing in on them, the occupants drove off and touched off a chase that eventually reached Glenwood Grade, off Highway 13 south of Lake Temescal, where police said three people got out of the SUV and ran into a residential neighborhood off Duncan Way.
San Leandro police officers, now joined by aircraft, officers and police dogs from Oakland police and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office searched the area and arrested the three suspects, authorities said.
Additional information was not released Tuesday night, with police citing an ongoing investigation.
