Two defendants were sentenced in Marin County for a roofing scheme that stole more than $340,000 from four county residents, the Marin County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.
John McNamara, 49, of Livermore and Dean Morgan, 34, of Limerick, Ireland, will each serve three years and eight months in state prison. The sentence includes their convictions for fraud cases in Sacramento County and Colorado.
The defendants pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and grand theft, the prosecution office said. Authorities said they claimed to work for a fictitious San Francisco company and persuaded victims to enter roofing and construction contracts. The victims the Marin County case were 78 to 85 years old.
McNamara and Morgan asked victims to pay “excessively large” down payment deposits and would typically disappear from jobs after doing little or no work, the District Attorney’s Office said. Under state law, contractors can accept a down payment deposit of no more than $1,000 or 10% of the contract price.
Morgan’s defense attorney, Robin Brennan, declined to comment Thursday. McNamara was represented by the public defender’s office.
