FREMONT — Police were investigating a collision between a car and semi-truck early Tuesday that left the car occupants injured, one critically.

The collision happened about 1:49 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Auto Mall Parkway and Cushing Parkway. It involved a BMW M4 two-door coupe and a semi-truck with a trailer attached, police said in a news release.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates the BMW, with two occupants, was traveling northbound on Cushing Parkway approaching the intersection of Auto Mall Parkway and the semi-truck was traveling westbound on Auto Mall parkway.

Both vehicles entered the intersection and collided. The front of the BMW made impact with the middle of the trailer and was pulled underneath the trailer, police said.

The BMW driver, a 23-year-old man, and front seat passenger, a 19-year-old man, were transported to a hospital. The driver was treated and released but the passenger was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said. The truck driver was not hurt and remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Police said the intersection is controlled by traffic signals which were properly functioning at the time. Pending further investigation it is believed one of the vehicles entered the intersection against a red light.

Drug or alcohol impairment is not suspected at this time, police said.

The intersection was shut down for several hours while police investigated.
