Olympic gold medal skater Alysa Liu did Oakland proud this week, giving shout-outs to her city while triple-lutzing and twizzling her way to the podium and global fame.
In return, one of Oakland’s finest — Fentons Creamery — is giving back.
The legendary, 132-year-old ice cream shop has offered the 20-year-old a sweet, ongoing payday.
“Ice cream for life? Seriously. We mean it,” the Instagram post says. “When you’re ready to celebrate, we would love to host your homecoming party at Fentons Creamery. The sundaes are on standby. Oakland shows up for its own.”
On Thursday in Milan, Italy, Liu captured the gold medal in women’s figure skating — the first in 24 years for the United States, since Sarah Hughes at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. Earlier in the week, she won gold in the team competition.
Her home rink has been the Oakland Ice Center, just a few miles away from the Piedmont Avenue creamery. And Fentons is ready for her to walk in the door when she returns home.
“We’re really happy for her,” Fentons manager Keith Ortega told the Bay Area News Group on Friday. “She deserves it. She’s a good example for all of the kids in Oakland.”
