Survival horror is a genre that excels in virtual reality. The atmosphere and desperation translate to the headset as players venture into the dark and immerse themselves in creepy and dangerous environments.
“Dread Meridian” is the latest entry to the medium. It launches today on Meta Quest and Steam devices. Published by Level Infinite and developed by Kukrgame, it puts players in the shoes of Daniela, a researcher who travels to a remote island during a 1930 arctic expedition in search of her missing twin sister, Isabella.
Like other games in the genre, players will scavenge for resources, solve unusual puzzles and fend off creatures on the isle. The campaign appears to weave these elements together while delving into the mystery behind Isabella’s disappearance. The publisher said the game is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness.”
The survival part of the game comes in how players squeeze the most out of the limited resources. That often means judiciously using ammo while relying heavily on a knife to fend off the monsters on the island.
Aside from the campaign, “Dread Meridian” also comes with a PVP mode, which pits two teams of two players. One side acts as humans, and the other side are the monsters as they battle each other. It sounds like a good amount of content for $19.99, though players who pre-order will receive a 15% launch discount.
