Three Bay Area residents were seriously injured Monday afternoon when a pickup truck lost control on a snow-covered stretch of Highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe and struck them as they were working on tire chains, authorities said.
According to a collision report by the California Highway Patrol, the three men — two aged 23, from San Jose and Concord, and a 22-year-old from San Leandro — were working to put tire chains on a vehicle at a turnout on Highway 50 when a driver in a pickup truck lost control while traveling west on the highway and struck all three men. One was thrown around 40 feet while the other two were dragged by the truck. They were later freed by passersby and Caltrans workers.
The three men were transferred to Barton Memorial Hospital with major injuries, the CHP said. One of the men was later airlifted to a hospital in Reno. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, though all three were still hospitalized Tuesday, according to an update from CHP Ofc. Ruth Loehr, the spokesperson for the South Lake Tahoe office.
The driver and passenger in the pickup truck did not sustain injuries, according to Loehr, and CHP determined that the accident did not involve drugs or alcohol.
