SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — A man who was shot during a confrontation with officers last week in South San Francisco has been identified as 28-year-old Luis Francisco-Manzo, police said.
Francisco-Manzo is recovering from his injuries at an area hospital, according to the South San Francisco Police Department.
Police on Thursday also identified the two officers who shot Francisco-Manzo as Brendan Hart and Martin Corona, as well as released footage of the shooting. Hart and Corona have eight and four-and-a-half years of experience, respectively, with the agency.
Officers were called to a residence in the 900 block of Sandra Court around 5:10 a.m. on Dec. 8 by Francisco-Manzo’s mother, who said her son had taken drugs and was talking about killing himself, police said. He also had a knife, according to his mother.
Body-worn cameras captured Francisco-Manzo exiting an apartment at the end of a long hallway and the officers telling him to turn around and walk backward to them.
Francisco-Manzo initially complied and approached the officers as instructed, but when he reached them, he pulled out a knife and brandished it, according to police.
The cameras also caught officers ordering Francisco-Manzo to drop the knife and firing Tasers at him when he failed to do so. Police said the Tasers proved ineffective.
Francisco-Manzo then moved toward the officers with the knife raised, at which point Hart and Corona opened fire, according to police. He immediately toppled to the ground.
Officers provided medical aid to Francisco-Manzo until firefighters arrived to take him to an area hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition, police said.
The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is continuing to investigate the shooting.
